Baldwin Family - Hezekiah - The Younger

I am spending my time in "retirement" -sigh- doing genealogy and am finding so much! It's just amazing!

On 30 December 2022 I went on my rarely used account called "American Ancestors" and started looking around for Mayflower ancestors.

I found the search page scrolled down and clicked on the names I wanted to  look at.

The Baldwin family came up with 2 direct live ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War!

This file is the son of Hezekiah Baldwin "the older". This soldier was the first son of Hezekiah "the Elder". Abiel is Hezekiah's wife/widow's name.

This page identifies Hazekiah Baldwin who served in the state of New York. The [am guessing] The W stands for Warrant. The warrant is number 20656.

Eaton Family - Eaton, Fuller - Findagrave

I first found this entry for Fuller Eaton in December 2020, I edited and posted the entire page on 24 December 2022. I will transcribe this entry in 2 parts; top and bottom.

This entry was found at:

The map that was placed in Sharyn Herian - I believe of/in the county that Fuller lived.

It is documenting that: BIRTH: Fuller was born in 1786, Pownal, Bennington County, Vermont, USA. [It wasn't in the USA as the country didn't exist just yet. In 1790, 4 years later, there will be the first census of the United States of America.]

DEATH: Fuller died in July 1862 [74 years old],

BURIAL: His Burial Details are unknown, Specifically: Fuller Eaton Jr. sold 35 5/7th of land he owned in Sec. 23, Town of Brooklyn to Fred Smith on Feb 20, 1884 "reserving one rod square out of the Southwest corner "where some graves are located" - Register of Deeds Office, Green Lake Wi, 5494.

Loomer Family - Joseph Loomer, MD

On 28 December I found the following article.[see the lower image] it was faded and old - probably an original page of the Atlantic Monthly, Vol. 21, published in 1902.

I went to Google Books.com and found it! This article reads as:

[continued from page 119]

After three years' residence in the wilderness, he [her father unnamed] returned to Massachusetts where he married Lucy Loomer, whom he had know from infancy. She was the youngest daughter of Doctor Joseph Loomer, who served as surgeon in the Revolutionary War from its beginning until his death from yellow fever, which occurred in Boston in 1778. About three years after his marriage, Olive Watkins removed his family to Trenton, New York, where re resided several years. While in Trenton, he built the first Unitarian church, in part payment for which he received a deed for a pew in the church. Later he removed to Oswego, New York, where he died in 1833.

Julia Watkins, the youngest but one of the children of Oliver Watkins and Lucy Loomer, was born at Trenton, New York, March 15, 1818. As a child she listened eagerly to the Revolutionary songs which her father sang. One of these began:

"Ye Parliaments of England, Ye Lords and Commons, tool
Consider well what you're about. And what ye mean to do.
You're now at war with Yankees. I'm sure you'll rue the day
You rouse the Sons of Liberty of North America."

She also heard her uncles, sons of Dr. Joseph Loomer, tell of their sufferings during the winter spent with Washington at Valley Forge. If she or her brothers or sisters chanced to say at any time that they were hungry, they were told that when they could eat the soles of their [shoes], they would understand what it really meant to be hungry. She heard the story about her half-brother who enlisted in the war of 1812, served his time, and then reenlisted, marched away never to return.

ANATOMY - Keiser Family

I do not know where this came from. Am wondering if it was from the Keiser line of the family. I don't remember when I first saw it but liked it. The Author/editor, W.L. Figenshu, is listed at the end of the page. This reads as:

ANATOMY - by our 8 years old quiz kid.
This is a man the parts on the ground are called feet they hurt when you walk on them and feel better when they are up on some thing They hold the toes which very often have corns which tell you when it is going to rain The ankles hold the feet onto the legs which run up to a couple of knobs called the knees The knees fold up and get tiff when you sit down They run up to a trunk which has no lid and can be opened only with a knife This is called an operation if you are alive and an autopsy if you are not
The trunk contains among other things the stummick which is where you get hungry Then you eat too much and you are sorry The walls of the chest are made of ribs which are ticklish The diaphram is used for getting hiccups and to hold up the chest The heart is what the doctor counts when he holds your wrist to see what time it is You should take good care of your insides as it is very had to get new ones  You should take good care of your insides as it is very hard to get new ones the back of the trunk is behind the front It is a long bone piled up on top of itself and is called spinal column It is attached on the shoulders near the top The shoulders hold the arms and hands These have  to be manicured On the sholders is the neck which gets dirty if it belongs a small boy and wears a collar and tie when it gets

older The adams apple is in the throat Only men have an adams apple It runs up and down when you talk
On the neck is the head which can be moved in any direction and gets a head ache On the front of the head is the face This is the part that looks like you If 2 faces look like you it is twins which cost twice as much to have The face is full of features such as eyes ears nose and mouth Earmuffs keep your ears warm but then you cant hear anything The mouth has 32 teeth when you are young but they all come out if you dont see your dentist twice a year at least The noses can be [orma] mental as well as useful The eyes are what you close to keep out the light when you sleep The brain is inside the head It thinks up inventions like the radio telephone and airplane and also the mistakes we make On to of the head is the hair which comes in different colors It can be curled parted brushed or worn strait back It can also be worn bald which is too bad but there is nothing you can do about it

You may lead a man to knowledge but you cant make him think                                             The End

Winch Family - Samuel Winch stepson - Civil War Letter

I received this letter from, I think, "The Strawberry Kid" who resides in or around Denver Colorado. She was one of the few people who was interested in the Winch Family Line. She sent me this copy as she was unable to care for her disabled child and continue with her genealogy searching. I wish to thank her at this time for sending this to me.

This letter was written by one of the sons of Samuel Winch's 3rd wife, Anne Meadows. Anne survived Samuel by an unknown number of years. It is transcribed as the soldier Orvil wrote it.

This letter documents his brother's death at Shiloh Battlefield, in Hardin County, Tennessee on April 6 to 7 1862.

This letter reads as follows: Camp Pilsbury April 14th 1862

Carroll Family - William Augustus Carroll - 1920 US Federal Census, New Jersey, Union County

I found this census for the Carroll family at an unknown date. I started to look for this after hearing and verifying the story of my Uncle Richard "Dick" Nelson's first wife Ida, was found dead on the floor of their home. Uncle Dick was working at St. Agnes Hospital - I believe. He came home for lunch and found Ida dead on the floor. She had been dead for "awhile".

The Carroll family was living in New Jersey, Union County, in the town of Roselle. Their address was 263 First Street East,

Ida Mae was the oldest of the children. Her brothers and sisters were Jeanetta born 1908; Rebecca born 1909; James born 1910; Garse [?] born 1911; William Augustus born 1914; and Orion George born 1915.

I am going to concentrate on William [aka Bill]. I do not have first hand knowledge about Bill, but I do know that he was a dancer. He must have been pretty good as he traveled throughout Asia with a dance company for a number of years.

This was very fortunate for him, as it is how he met his wife, Gladys [Doreen Edith] "Cheetah" Bond who was also a dancer in the Far East theaters.

They met, and eventually joined forces, possibly in Manilla, Philippines. I don't know if they were planning on staying there, but I also know that Doreen became pregnant.

At or about the same time, the Japanese had overwhelmed where Doreen and Bill were residing in the Philippines, and occupied China. The camp they were sent to was in Shanghai China, and interned nearly 130,000 civilians without trial.

I have learned that the women's camp would make quilts and give them to the guards. The women would sew their names into the quilts. Eventually the quilts would end up in the men's camp. The men would know if their wives, daughters or other relatives were alive by reading the quilting.

The story I heard from Richard was that the family was in the Shanghai Internment camp. The camp was divided into two - one for men and one for women. He also said that the Japanese - to show how magnamimous they were - were holding a raffle. I believe it was only in the men's side of the camp. Each prisoner was given a numbered ticket. The companion ticket was put into a jar. The drawing of the winning tickets took place. Bill, had one of the winning tickets!

Bill knew the pastor that was also interned in the camp. He asked if the pastor would take his ticket - but the pastor had to go to Fresno first to let Bill's family know that he, his wife, and daughter were alive in Shanghai. The pastor agreed and was true to his word. It made the front page news in the Fresno Bee.

This article documents the  part of the above. This clipping reads as:

Visual confirmation, today provided by an Associated Press photograph, of the safety of her son, Billy Carroll, 30, and his wife, Cheetah Carroll, internationally famous dancers, and their 17 months old daughter, Sharon, all recently liberated prisoners of the Japanese, delighted Mrs. Ida Carroll of 451 Echo Avenue.

Her son, a former Fresnan, and his wife the daughter of an English father and a Hindu mother and whom Carroll met in Calcutta, India, were living in Manilla when they were seized by the Japanese soon after the war began. They were moved to the Chapel Camp in Shanghai some time later and there their daughter was born.
Red Cross Gives Word

The only other news of her son's and family's liberation was received by Mrs. Carroll in August through the Red Cross which invited her to send them a 120 word message.
Mrs. Carroll was preparing to go to Manila to live when the war intervened.
She received only two direct communications from her son during his long captivity. One, which reached Fresno last June 12th, was written December 12, 1944, from Chapei. Signed with the name of the baby, it said:
"I am nine months old today. Daddy and Mommie are fine. I have black eyes and light heir and am very pretty. I can dance like my Mommie and Daddy. We have been receiving your mail."
    Get More Letters
`A week later Mrs. Carroll and her daughter, Mrs. Ida Nelson of Fresno, received through the Red Cross leeters which Carrol had written earlier in 1944. They announced the birth of Sharon.
Mrs. Carroll, her husband, the late James E. Carroll, and their five children cam to Fresno from New Jersey about 25 years ago. When Billy was 12 years old he began to study dancing. Three years later he went to Los Angeles. At the age of 17 he entered into a contract with Sir Victor Sassoon to dance in the Catthay Hotel in Shanghai. several years later he joined the Russian Ballet and during the two year engagement studied under the director, Dmitri Folkine.
Dances As Child
Carroll's wife, whose maiden name was Gladys Bond, is the daughter of an English army lieutenant and a Hidu mother. She is said to be a niece of the Maharjah of Kucia. Known professionally as Conchita and as Cheetah Carroll she began dancing as a child and made her professional debut with the Folies Bergere in Paris when she was 14.
Late in 1940 she and Carroll came to the United States, intending to be married in Fresno, but she was detained on Terminal Island, San Pedro, by immigratioin authorities because of an exhausted quota. She and Carroll later were married in Manila and intended to make their permanent home there.
Some time ago Carroll's mother learned through a missionary who returned to the United States on

the exchange ship Gripsholm that, in the determination of which of the captives would be exchanged, Carroll also drew a lucky number.
His wife did not, however, and he refused to leave her and their child.
Besides Mrs. Nelson, with whom her mother lives, Carroll has two brothers, Orion Carroll of Venture Avenue and D Street, and Jimmie Carroll, a mess sergeant who served with the 7yth Army in Europe and who expects to return to Fresno before Christmas.
Another sister, Mrs. James W. Gibbs of Fresno, died some time ago. Mrs. O. M. Judd and Mrs. Jessie Potter of 632 Harrison Avenue are aunts of Carroll.
Carroll's mother expects him to bring his family to Fresno for a visit.

Nelson Family - Richard and Aunt Deb

This is a picture of my Aunt Deborah Masters Nelson with her only child Richard Henry Nelson Jr. I believe it was taken in their backyard in 1954.

I believe that this picture was taken at the same time as the one above. I believe that that is my grandmother Emily Jarl Masters Winch trying to get Richard to eat something.
