Jarl Family Census - 1861 - 1865 - Anders Magnus Jarl

This is the 1861 - 1865 Jarl family census in Osrarp Nybygget. It is found in Riksarkivet.com [the Swedish Archives]. The parish name is Norra Sandsjö kyrkoarkiv [church archive]. The page number is 223. The area/town is Osrarp, and according to this record a S.T. [Soldier Torp/farm] No. 119.

Refer to the family census for Jarl, 1866-1870 for the column heading descriptions.

Line 1 is for Soldaten Gratiatesten [I believe this translates to retired soldier but could be wrong], Anders Magnus Jarl. He was born in 1809, on the 18 of December in Ljunga.

Line 2 is his H[hustru/wife] Anna Sophia Andersdotter. Anna was born in 1807, on May 5th.

Line 3 is Anders and Anna's daughter [dotter] Christina Louisa. She was born in 1832 on September 7th. The 'v' means she was vaccinated against Koppor [Small pox]. She is crossed out because she moved to [flyttat] Nässjö, in 1863. She was the 29th person to leave Nässjö in 1865.

Line/space 4 is taken up by 2 entries:
Christina Louisa has returned. Her birth day is entered as well as the date that she returned to Osrarp from Nässjö on the 23rd of October, 1865.

The 2nd entry is for Ander's and Anna's son Johan Alfred. Johan was born in 1841, on April 4th. His name is crossed out because he died on June 20th, 1863. He had been vaccinated against Small Pox.

Line 5 is Dotter Gustava Charlotte. She was born on November 19, 1845. She was vaccinated for Small Pox. She moved to Senedan in 1864. She is crossed out because she is listed again on line 8.

Line 6 lists Ander's and Anna's fosterdotter [foster daughter] Ida Sofia. Ida was born on June 2 1855.

On the same line as Ida is the entry of S.T. [Soldier Torp/farm] No. 119.

Line 7 is Soldatren [Soldier] Anders Johan [Johansson] Jarl. His birthdate is June 6 1843. Anders was born in Sandsjö. He married Gustasva Charlotta Magnisdtr on June 27, 1864. He has been vaccinated against Koppor. He is listed in this census on page 244, and moved to this page in 1863. [He is listed with his family on 244.]

Line 8 is Anders Johan Jarl hustru Gustasva Charlotta Marnisdtr. Her birth date is November 10, 1845, in Ljunga. She was vaccinated against small Pox.

Line 9 is Anders and Gustasva's daughter [Dotr.] Hilda Amanda. Amanda was born October 3rd, 1864 in Sandsjö. [I have not been able to find her birth record at this time.]

Jarl Family Census - 1866 - 1870 - Anders Johan Jarl Family - page 1

This is the Anders Johan Jarl Family census 1866 - 1870, in Osrarp S. T [Solder Farm?], Norra Sandsjö Kyrkoarkiv [church archive], Husförhörslängder [household records]. This is image # 513, page 573 in the Norra Sandsjö, Jonkopoing, Sweden. These records reside in Vadstena National Archives under the web search name of Riksarkivet.com.

The left page documents each person in the household "vital statistics"

The right page document  is the person passed reciting the catechism. I will not be discussing anything further at this time about this page, for this family.

The first major vertical column names the person person on each consecutive line. The top of the page indexes the family of the Soldier Anders Johan Jarl.

The second major vertical column is made up of 3 smaller columns. It states the year that the person was born, the month and the place.

The third major vertical column is made up when the person was married - the year, month and day of the month.

The third slender vertical column states whether or not the person had been vaccinated for small pox.

The fourth major vertical column is made up of two vertical columns documenting when the person moved out [or left the area].

The last vertical column on the page states the day, month, and year the person died.

Horizontal line 1 states the farm is No 119. Soldat [soldier] Anders John Jarl is the head of the house hold. [All of those following him in the top of the page shows how they are related to Anders.]

Line 1, states  he was born in 43 [1843] on the 23rd of June in Sandsjö. Anders was married in 1864, on 27 of March. He has been vaccinated for small pox.

Line 2, This person is Ander's Hustru [wife]. Her name is Gustava Charlotta Magndtr. [Magnasdotter]. Gustava was born in 45 [1845], on the 10th of November in Ljunga.

Line 3, is Anders and Gustava's daughter Hilda Amanda. Hilda was born in 1864 on the 3rd day of March in Sandsjö.

Line 4, is Anders and Gustava's 2nd daughter Anna Wilhelminia Dorothea. Anna was born in 1867 on the 7th day of January in D.[ditto] meaning Sandsjö.

Line 5, documents Anders and Gustava's 3rd daughter named Josephina Alberina. Josephina was born in 1869, on the 27th day of September in D.[ditto] meaning Sandsjö. Her name is crossed out as she died in 1870 on the first day of January. She lived  2 months and possibly suffered from an unknown disease process.

Line number 6, a second daughter named Josephina Albertina. This Josephina was born in 1871, on the 4th day of May in D.[ditto] meaning Sandsjö.

What is interesting about this family page is that starting on line 11 there is another family entry. I believe that the persons listed on lines 12 and 13 were Anders Johan Jarl's parents. This household reads as:

Line 11 states [?] Nybygget [translate "newly built"]. I believe that the Army built this building so that Anders Magnus Jarl could be close to Anders.

Line 12 states  [?] Sold. [soldier] Gratiahssen [might translate as free house] Anders Magnus Jarl. Anders Magnus Jarl was born in 1809,  the 18th day of November in Ljunga.

Line 13 reads Huthr [Hustru] Anna Sophia Andersdotter. Anna was born in 1807, on the 5th of May.

Line 14 reads: D[daughter] Christina Louisa. Christina was born in 1832 on the 7th day of September. Her name and the child below her are crossed out because they moved away. On the right page the last 3 columns states that Christina and her son Johan moved to N. Amerika on the 30th day of April, 1869. The "47" refers to Christina and her son are the 47th person/s to leave Norra Sandjö in 1869.

Line 15 Östa. Son. Johan Alfrid, who was born in 1868, on the 21st of July. [I cannot at this time find the birth record of the Johan Alfrid birth record.]

Line 16 [hette dottern> called daughter Ida Sophia Jarl.] This person was born in 1855, on the 2nd of June in Walesjö. On the right page there is a note stating - [I think] with mother pigan Johanna Johansdotter from March 4th Nybigget and ? [I have looked for this person in Walesjö, but cannot find her birth. She may have been orphaned at some point, and then brought into this family.]

This is the moving out entry for Christina Louisa and her son Johan Alfrid. This entry reads: [the]47th [exit from Norra Sandsjö] on the 30th of April  [Christina and Johan] can be found on page 573 of the census. They left Nybigget for N.Amerika; 1 female and 1 male.

Winch Family - Mayflower Ancestral Lines - Samuel Fuller

This is the Samuel Fuller line. I found this on FamilySearch.org as noted below. This Fuller line branches from the Eaton line where Benjamin Eaton, whose mother was Lydia Fuller. Lydia is a new person and line to me. So I need to do more research!

This is how our line connects from Samuel Fuller to our grandfather Cecil Erwin Winch:

Samuel Fuller > Samuel Fuller > John Fuller Sr > Lydia Fuller > Benjamin Fuller > Fuller Eaton Sr > George Eaton > Ruth Ann Eaton > Francis John Elwess > Anna Emmoline Elwess > Cecil Erwin Winch.

This is the FamilySearch.org on 17 November 2020. I have entered this string of ancestors into Ancestry.com

I only have searched as far up the tree to Ruth Ann Eaton who was born in 1837 and died in 1900. She was born in the city of Deerfield, Oneida County, New York state.

Winch Family Census - 1860 - Albert Winch - page 7

I double checked last night - 15 November 2020 - and this census is still on Ancestry.com.  It reads:

1860 United States Federal Census
Minnesota > Fillmore > Canton

Page No. 111

SCHEDULE 1. - Free Inhabitants in Canton Township in the County of Fillmore State of Minnesota enumerated by me, on the 7th day of August 1860. [unknown] Ass't Marshal. Post office Elliata

Column 1: The Dwelling/house numbered in the order of visitation. line 4: 831

Column 2: Families numbered in the order of visitation: 801

Column 3: The name of every person whose usual place of abode on the first day of June, 1860, was in this family: Samuel Winch

Column 4:  Age. 63

Column 5: Sex. M[ale]

Column 6: Color,{White, Black, or mulatto [Empty for all persons of this household.]

Column 7: Profession, Occupation, or Trade of each person, male and female, over 15 years of age. Farmer.

Column 8: Value of Real Estate. 2000

Column 9: Value of Personal Estate. 300

Column 10: Place of Birth, Naming the State, Territory, or Country. New York

[For the sake of brevity, I will be more concise for the rest of the household:]

Line 5: Mary is a female, 52 years old.

Line 6: William is a 19 year old male, who is a Farm hand.

Line 7: Albert is a 17 year old male who is a Farm Hand.

Line 8: Dexter is a 16 year old male who is a Farm Hand.

Line 9: Susan is a 10 year old female who attended school within the year.

The census states that all of the above were born in New York State. I do not believe that that is true as Albert's death record says he was born in Canada. I believe that this is a blended household, and that Mary is Samuel's 2nd wife, as Albert's mother Elizabeth died in Ontario Canada.

 IN MEMORIAM
Another Early Settler of this Section
Called to His Reward.

DIED.- On Sunday night, February 27, 1898, Mr. George VanAmber, at the advanced age of 83 years, 9 months, and 12 days.
Deceased was born in Canada in 1814. Moved to Jefferson county, M. Y., with his parents when a child. Was married in January, 1841, to Miss Mary Briggs, who died in 1861, Cane West in 1849, locating in Green Lake county, Wis. In 1863 Mr. VanAmber removed to Minnesota, and settled on a farm in Nashville Center township, Martin County. On July 23, 1866, he was married for the second time to Abigail Cook, who died in the year 1886.
Of the family there are four children by the first marriage and two by the second, living- Mrs. J. J. Eygebroad, and Mrs. Hattie Winch, of this city, David VanAmber, of Huntley, Charles VanAmber, of Cass County, Mrs. L.H. Thatcher, of this city, and Ray VanAmber, of Nashville. A son, Otto, died in his sixteenth year.

Since the 1st of September last, and until three weeks ago to-day, Mr. VanAmber had been visiting his son in Cass county. Shortly before his return home he was taken ill, and inspite of the best of care and all that medical skill could do, he gradually grew worse  until the hour of his death.

Van Amber Family - Van Amber Family Letter - page 2

 - 1 -
CS71V2182
1973
I, Mrs. Anbrose Gaffancey, have done detailed research into the family on my father's side. I was born Florence Mary VanAmber at Truman, Mn.
We can go back to burials at Alexandria Bay, New York, of a Matthew VanAmber in 1828, and a Mary VanAmber in 1847, These could be my great-grand-parent VanAmbers!
There should be three VanAmber boys and one girl. Besides Grandfather George Wesley, there was James, a Methodist Minister, and the other, whose descendents we may have now found, but are still checking. The sister, Naomi, married a Taft and lived in Ohio. That is all we know of her.
On May, 15, 1815 or 1816, George Wesley VanAmber was born on one of the Thousand Islands in the St. Lawrence River, Canadian Waters. We do not know which Island. Perhaps the birth record is in a Canadian courthouse.
In a letter to me from Claribel VanAmber Joyce (now deceased), of Skaneatele New York, she heard some of the VanAmbers owned Wellesley Island in the Thousand Islands. From a letter of Hazel Simpson, the historian at Alexandria Bay. She said that is misinformation, since Wellesley Island is 8,068 acres. It was known as Well's Island after one of the early settlers.
George W. VanAmber married Mary (maiden name unknown).. They lived at Saranac Lake, N.Y.. Lucetta(1843-), Harvey(15 Jan. 1844- 28 Mar. 1847), George(1846-1847), Harriet(1848-1927), possibly Lester(1850-1850), were born- in N.Y. State--exactly where we don't know-), and Delbert Eugene(ere we don't know. Harvey and George Jr. died as babies. At least one is said by father to be buried at Saranac Lake. During World War II, I visited a few times at Lake Placid, famous resort, near Saranac Lake. I often think of the beautiful country there in the Adirondick Mts.
In 1850-51, George VanAmber and family moved West by way of the Great Lakes History books tell us many people traveled by way of the Great Lakes in those days because of the cheap means of transportation.

The family settled at Green Lake, Wisconsin. Lucetta is listed in the 1860 census at Wisc. Hist. Society, but we have no idea what happened to her. She was 17 then. David(1851-1929), Charles(1853-1935). and Delbert Eugene(1856-185?) were born here. Delbert Eugene died a few months after birth. We do not know were he is buried. In years gone by, markers weren't always put on graves--especially for babies.
In 1863, the VanAmber family left Green Lake, Wisc., and moved to Nashvill Township, Martin County, several miles East of Truman, Minnesota.
Harriet VanAmber and Albert Winch were married here. They had seven children: Orville, lived at Onamia, Mn.; Harvey, lived at Winnebago, Mn.; Mrs. M. W. Berman lived in Miami, Florida; Mrs. G. Erdman, lived at Amboy, Mn.; Mrs Omar Lund, Dawson, Mc.; and Mrs. R. H. Cramer, at Winnebago, Mn.. I have no records of their families.
David VanAmber and wife lived in Truman, where he operated an elevator at time. Several children were born here---They later live in Joplin, Missouri. David is buried in Westford Cemetery, East of Truman, beside his wife.
Charles VanAmber, and family, lived in Montana where he is buried. They had 5 children: Lulu (Mrs. Silas Manley), who had Leon, Charles, Lloyd, Dorothy, and Betty; Jessie (Mrs. Wilbur Gumpert), no children; Myrtle (Mrs. Chester Wilson had Russell-killed in War, Lucille, lives in Brazil; Vern (Mrs. McCrackin), had Mary Ellen, Alden, Darrel, and Earl; Margaret (Mrs. Sheppard), had Dade, Dell, Bob, and Florence. Most of these live around Great Falls, Montana.
We are gradually learning of grandmother Abigail's ancestry. Her mother (my great-grandmother), was Lucy Lewis (13 Dec. 1796-17 July 1872). Of Lucy's husband, I only know the first initial of his first name is "S". Lucy Lewis was born in Vermont. The family lived in Lower Canada, where several children were born. They then lived in Dayton, Green County, Wisconsin. Lucy Lewis is buried just inside the gate in East Dayton Cemetery, Dayton, Wisc. There is a broken stone at her grave. Lucy's son Melvin F. Lewis and wife Nancy, have a son named Clarence L. Lewis buried a short distance from Lucy. He died July 29, 18[??] 1 yr., 3 mos., 29 days.
Melvin and Nancy Lewis later lived in Belle Creek Township, Goodhue County, Minnesota. They had a daughter Emerilla (Rilla), and sib born in 1867, not yes named in the letter of that is in my possession. Of this family, I

Van Amber - Van Amber Family Letter - page 1

I am not sure where I found this letter. I believe it was written by  Mrs. Florence VanAmber Gaffaney. I believe she died in 1982. I must have received it from a relative of hers. I am trying to find the relative that must have posted the information about her on line on various genealogy forums. In the upper right hand corner it reads $3.25 for the document.

FORWARD
In the beginning, my intention was to work on the , I visited Gladys Hutton, of Redwood, N.Y. and a James VanAmber, at Syracuse, N.Y.. We visited at Alexandria Bay, on the St. Lawrence River, and viewed the Thousand Is, I also saw VanAmber graves at So. Lawrence River, and viewed the Lewis family "tree" -- my paternal grandparents' ancestors. I have always been curious, and proud of my heritage.
Several years ago, after our family was grown, I began genealogy work as a boggy. I visited the library in Alexandria, and found much information on how to go about researching a family "tree". I sent for books pamphlets, wrote to Clerk of Courts, Historical Societies, churches, relatives, anywhere I might get the smallest clue to our ancestors. Because many records were not kept years ago, and many have been destroyed by fire, etc., searching can be a tremendous job. But, I find genealogy a fascinating and educational hobby. All of the "pieces of the family tree will never be complete, but the "disease" of hunting and researching is in my system, and I believe it is there to stay. Even as I write this, I am awaiting the mail, in hopes of some information.
My intentions are to make copies of the family tree to give to the Minnesota Hist. Society, as well as the one at Alexandria Bay, New York. Some day, I intend giving my Civil War letters and papers to the Minn. Hist. Society in St.Paul, under the heading "VanAmber-Lewis-Cook: papers.
In recent years, I have been corresponding with VanAmber cousins, descendents of James VanAmber, the Methodist Minister, brother of my grandfather, George Wesley VanAmber. In the summer of 1972, I visited Gladys Hutton, of Redwood, M.Y. and a James VanAmbers, at Syracuse, N.Y.. We visited at Alexandria Bay, on the St. Lawrence River, and viewed the ThousandIs, I also saw Vanamber graves at Plessis, M.Y.. William Wallace VanAmber, son of James, is buried there, along side of James' wife. After James' death, his wife re- married, and the inscription on her stone reads "Mary Ann Ivers (1816-1874), former wife of James VanAmber".
I also correspond with another James' descendents, Mrs. Ethel Scott, in Columbus, Ohio.
VanAmver cousins in NewYork State inform me there is a "VanAmber" Road in Naumburg, New York, named after the VanAmbers of that area. Naumburg is near Watertown, New York.
Only recently, I was given the name of a Hiram VanAmber in Maryland. He is 90 yrs of age, and in a rest-home, but his daughter, Helen Johnson, answered, and gave me the family tree. Also, Hiram's brother, Wilbur, lives in Sarasota, Florida. I have written his daughter, and am awaiting a reply. These VanAmber ancestors were born at Alexandria Bay, and Watertown area, so we can easily assume they are relation. They inform me the original name was VonAmburg,  and gradually changed to VanAmber. I shall have to look into that! Beckwith VanAmbber, the grandfather of Hiram and Wilbur could be the brother of my grandfather, George, and his brother James. Helen VanAmber Johnson also said there is an "old VanAmber cemetery" near Carthage, New York.
As I finish the following history, with data, I expect to have more to add. In the meantime, I go on with the renewed spirits every time I go to the mail box, and come back with a letter. The thrill of the discovery of an ancestor, or descendant, and the history that goes with it is there!

NOTE: Typed this October, 1973, at our farm home in Hudson Township, 12 miles South East of Alexandria, Minnesota.
