Jarl Family Military Records - Carl Petter Jarl

This is as large as I could get this insert below, without the insert hanging out the side of the blog page.

I found this in the "Genalmösterroll" [General roll]. This is from the year 1846. I believe I found this in the Swedish Archives online, a number of years ago.

Första Corporalskapet translates into "First Corporal".
I believe that Norramäla refers to the area he is from.

I believe that the entry below Carl's name states he enlisted on 10 March 1828.

The column to the right of his name documents that he is 38 years and 3 months old [1/4 = 3 months].

The next column documents that he has been in the Army for 18 and 1/4 years.

His height is 5'10". 

To the right of that, it reads "gift", meaning he is married.

Winch Family - Myra Lee Winch - page 2 - 3 to 4 years.

In the picture to the right, I am standing in the walkway/front door of our house on Vagedes in Fresno. This picture was probably taken in late 1955 around Christmas Time. What is "neat" about this picture is that I found it in my Grandpa Shirley "Tripp" Triplett's wallet after his death in 1982. 

The picture to the left was taken at Easter, 1956. The only reason I know the date is because there is an Easter Lily in front of the fireplace. The chair that I am sitting in was my mother's. Right now the only thing that I put in that wicker chair is a stuffed bear with a bow tie. That bear was given to me by a good friend, Carol Shawa [she was married to a Palestinian) at work (Marian Medical Center) before Andrew was born. She had bought a dress for it to wear. That must have been in the early Fall of 1985, before we knew Andrew was an Andrew not an Andrea!

Talking about Christmas, I think that this picture was taken about 1957. Obviously I am telling Santa Claus what I wanted for Christmas. It was probably cold outside as I have my had, gloves, coat, and my purse to keep all my essentials in!

Winch Family - Myra Lee Winch - page 0 - 2 years.

I thought about starting with "I was born", but someone famous uses that line in their autobiography, so I changed my mind. 

This picture to the right is of my parents and under that top mom is wearing is me. I would think that this was sometime in the early summer of 1954.

I was supposed to be born on or about October 3rd. That would have made my dad's mother extremely happy, but my mother was relieved that I was born on October 16. My Mom did not care for my father's mother, but she hid it well.

So, I was 2 weeks late. Mom said that when she came into the OB Delivery floor, she didn't look like she was ready to deliver. My Dad was relegated to the waiting room with other expectant fathers. Except for newborn males or male doctors, the OB unit was no man's land.

I think I gave my mom a sleepless night. I was born and delivered at 0500 by Dr. Devereaux. He took care of me until I married Brian.

When I was born my left eye wouldn't open. Mom said that Dr. Devereaux took my Dad to the nursery window and explained that I would open my eye, and that the closed eye was due to how I had been laying in Mom before I was born. By the time I was 3 months old both of my eyes were wide open.

Mom and I didn't go home until I was 5 days old. My Mom's dad couldn't even come in and see either of us in the hospital. Supposedly Grandpa and Grandma were visiting Grandma's relatives above Sacramento when I was born. They had stayed in Fresno until Mom told them to go ahead and go. And of course that was when I was born.

Grandpa tried to come to see Mom and me while we were in the hospital, but he was refused entrance. His only child, just had his only grandchild and he didn't get to see or hold me until I was at home.

You can kind of see my head as Mom and Dad look at me adoringly. Am thinking that my Grandpa took this picture. I have other pictures of my Grandparents holding me, and finally the Grandmother's  holding and looking down at me.

Mom and Dad named me after them. They didn't want either side of the family to feel slighted if I had been named after the other side. Myra is feminine for Myron. My mother's middle name was Lee. So there you have it: Myra Lee became my name.

To the right is me at 3 months. My mother probably made me smile! By 3 months of age I was fine! Am sitting here looking at this picture and I think I looked like a boy! I am sure no one cut my hair, but that's what I look like to me. No ribbons or curls! But I look happy! Supposedly Mom was making faces at me so they would have a picture of me smiling at 3 months. 

What these 2 pictures don't show is the playhouse that my Dad made for me. It was painted white and had cut out windows. He put window flower boxes at the windows. You could fold it up and store it. We had that playhouse for a long time......

My parents owned the home I came home to for 29 years. The address of this house is 4610 N. Vagedes, in Fresno California. 

One of my favorite pictures is the picture of me having a bath in the kitchen sink. I had forgotten until we visited the place in 2012, that the tile was a baby blue with light yellow trim. The cupboards were metal. Apparently, when they were building the house they left the wood and metal window frames out in the rainy weather. Because of that they were warped, and had to be reordered ordered. The other opportunity was the builder would bring beer to the worksite for the builders to drink during constructing our house!

Mom and Dad moved into the house in January 1951 and there was mud everywhere. [They lived in Mom's apartment after they married on 16 December 1950. Dad said that he gave Mom's Dad a birthday present by marrying his daughter! Grandpa's birthday was on 16 December.] Anyway, one time I was waving my arms and I got a burn on my wrist from the faucet - I can't find the burn area on either wrist any more, but I used to be able to. I think Mom never got over that incident.

I think this picture in the baby carrier was taken at my Dad's Mother's home. [My Dad and his brother Grover bought the home for "Granny" and Aunt Lola to live in so they didn't have to pay rent].  I think that after Grover died - I have several pages dedicated to Grover here in this blog - that Dad paid it off the mortgage with the life insurance money. The property was in my Dad's name. The house had one bedroom but had housed all of  Granny's children, Dad, Grover and their 3 sisters, Deborah, Doris, and Lola. [At some point in the late 1960's or 70's, Aunt Lola bought the property from Dad.]

Granny was able to live there for the rest of her life. The deal was that Dad had paid off the house, but she paid the electric bill. Unfortunately Granny loved to go to "The Moose" club and play bingo. Then she would take the "Barney's Bus" to Lake Tahoe and blow her Social Security check playing bingo. She would come home and her electricity was turned off. She would ask my Dad to get it turned back on, but he said "no". Then Granny would hit up my Aunt Deborah or Cousin Richard and they would pay the utility bill....... 

This picture is of my grandparents and me. There names were Hildegarde Olga Teuber Starr Triplett (am leaving out 2 more husbands), and Mom's Dad, Shirley Green Triplett. This was probably taken in late spring or early summer. I still miss them very much! 

This is a picture of my 1st birthday. This was taken in the backyard of our Vagedes house.

This is me feeding Mike our Pekinese. I think I am in the back yard. Mom had Mike before she and Dad got married. I really don't remember Mike as I was so young.

Elwess Family - Francis J. Elwess - page 8

This headstone resides in the Richville Cemetery, Richville, Otter Tail County, Minnesota. I have not been able to find death records for either Frank or his wife Mary Cordelia Lloyd. But will keep looking!

This stone reads:

Jarl Family Census - 1861 - 1865 - Anders Magnus Jarl

This is the 1861 - 1865 Jarl family census in Osrarp Nybygget. It is found in Riksarkivet.com [the Swedish Archives]. The parish name is Norra Sandsjö kyrkoarkiv [church archive]. The page number is 223. The area/town is Osrarp, and according to this record a S.T. [Soldier Torp/farm] No. 119.

Refer to the family census for Jarl, 1866-1870 for the column heading descriptions.

Line 1 is for Soldaten Gratiatesten [I believe this translates to retired soldier but could be wrong], Anders Magnus Jarl. He was born in 1809, on the 18 of December in Ljunga.

Line 2 is his H[hustru/wife] Anna Sophia Andersdotter. Anna was born in 1807, on May 5th.

Line 3 is Anders and Anna's daughter [dotter] Christina Louisa. She was born in 1832 on September 7th. The 'v' means she was vaccinated against Koppor [Small pox]. She is crossed out because she moved to [flyttat] Nässjö, in 1863. She was the 29th person to leave Nässjö in 1865.

Line/space 4 is taken up by 2 entries:

Christina Louisa has returned. Her birth day is entered as well as the date that she returned to Osrarp from Nässjö on the 23rd of October, 1865.

The 2nd entry is for Ander's and Anna's son Johan Alfred. Johan was born in 1841, on April 4th. His name is crossed out because he died on June 20th, 1863. He had been vaccinated against Small Pox.

Line 5 is Dotter Gustava Charlotte. She was born on November 19, 1845. She was vaccinated for Small Pox. She moved to Senedan in 1864. She is crossed out because she is listed again on line 8.

Line 6 lists Ander's and Anna's fosterdotter [foster daughter] Ida Sofia. Ida was born on June 2 1855.

On the same line as Ida is the entry of S.T. [Soldier Torp/farm] No. 119.

Line 7 is Soldatren [Soldier] Anders Johan [Johansson] Jarl. His birthdate is June 6 1843. Anders was born in Sandsjö. He married Gustasva Charlotta Magnisdtr on June 27, 1864. He has been vaccinated against Koppor. He is listed in this census on page 244, and moved to this page in 1863. [He is listed with his family on 244.]

Line 8 is Anders Johan Jarl hustru Gustasva Charlotta Marnisdtr. Her birth date is November 10, 1845, in Ljunga. She was vaccinated against small Pox.

Line 9 is Anders and Gustasva's daughter [Dotr.] Hilda Amanda. Amanda was born October 3rd, 1864 in Sandsjö. [I have not been able to find her birth record at this time.]

Jarl Family Census - 1866 - 1870 - Anders Johan Jarl Family - page 1

This is the Anders Johan Jarl Family census 1866 - 1870, in Osrarp S. T [Solder Farm?], Norra Sandsjö Kyrkoarkiv [church archive], Husförhörslängder [household records]. This is image # 513, page 573 in the Norra Sandsjö, Jonkopoing, Sweden. These records reside in Vadstena National Archives under the web search name of Riksarkivet.com.

The left page documents each person in the household "vital statistics"

The right page document  is the person passed reciting the catechism. I will not be discussing anything further at this time about this page, for this family.

The first major vertical column names the person person on each consecutive line. The top of the page indexes the family of the Soldier Anders Johan Jarl. 

The second major vertical column is made up of 3 smaller columns. It states the year that the person was born, the month and the place.

The third major vertical column is made up when the person was married - the year, month and day of the month.

The third slender vertical column states whether or not the person had been vaccinated for small pox.

The fourth major vertical column is made up of two vertical columns documenting when the person moved out [or left the area].

The last vertical column on the page states the day, month, and year the person died.

Horizontal line 1 states the farm is No 119. Soldat [soldier] Anders John Jarl is the head of the house hold. [All of those following him in the top of the page shows how they are related to Anders.]

Line 1, states  he was born in 43 [1843] on the 23rd of June in Sandsjö. Anders was married in 1864, on 27 of March. He has been vaccinated for small pox.

Line 2, This person is Ander's Hustru [wife]. Her name is Gustava Charlotta Magndtr. [Magnasdotter]. Gustava was born in 45 [1845], on the 10th of November in Ljunga.

Line 3, is Anders and Gustava's daughter Hilda Amanda. Hilda was born in 1864 on the 3rd day of March in Sandsjö.

Line 4, is Anders and Gustava's 2nd daughter Anna Wilhelminia Dorothea. Anna was born in 1867 on the 7th day of January in D.[ditto] meaning Sandsjö.

Line 5, documents Anders and Gustava's 3rd daughter named Josephina Alberina. Josephina was born in 1869, on the 27th day of September in D.[ditto] meaning Sandsjö. Her name is crossed out as she died in 1870 on the first day of January. She lived  2 months and possibly suffered from an unknown disease process.

Line number 6, a second daughter named Josephina Albertina. This Josephina was born in 1871, on the 4th day of May in D.[ditto] meaning Sandsjö.

What is interesting about this family page is that starting on line 11 there is another family entry. I believe that the persons listed on lines 12 and 13 were Anders Johan Jarl's parents. This household reads as:

Line 11 states [?] Nybygget [translate "newly built"]. I believe that the Army built this building so that Anders Magnus Jarl could be close to Anders.

Line 12 states  [?] Sold. [soldier] Gratiahssen [might translate as free house] Anders Magnus Jarl. Anders Magnus Jarl was born in 1809,  the 18th day of November in Ljunga.

Line 13 reads Huthr [Hustru] Anna Sophia Andersdotter. Anna was born in 1807, on the 5th of May.

Line 14 reads: D[daughter] Christina Louisa. Christina was born in 1832 on the 7th day of September. Her name and the child below her are crossed out because they moved away. On the right page the last 3 columns states that Christina and her son Johan moved to N. Amerika on the 30th day of April, 1869. The "47" refers to Christina and her son are the 47th person/s to leave Norra Sandjö in 1869.

Line 15 Östa. Son. Johan Alfrid, who was born in 1868, on the 21st of July. [I cannot at this time find the birth record of the Johan Alfrid birth record.]

Line 16 [hette dottern> called daughter Ida Sophia Jarl.] This person was born in 1855, on the 2nd of June in Walesjö. On the right page there is a note stating - [I think] with mother pigan Johanna Johansdotter from March 4th Nybigget and ? [I have looked for this person in Walesjö, but cannot find her birth. She may have been orphaned at some point, and then brought into this family.]

This is the moving out entry for Christina Louisa and her son Johan Alfrid. This entry reads: [the]47th [exit from Norra Sandsjö] on the 30th of April  [Christina and Johan] can be found on page 573 of the census. They left Nybigget for N.Amerika; 1 female and 1 male.

This is the Samuel Fuller line. I found this on FamilySearch.org as noted below. This Fuller line branches from the Eaton line where Benjamin Eaton, whose mother was Lydia Fuller. Lydia is a new person and line to me. So I need to do more research!

Column 3: The name of every person whose usual place of abode on the first day of June, 1860, was in this family: Samuel Winch 

Column 4:  Age. 63

Column 5: Sex. M[ale]

Column 6: Color,{White, Black, or mulatto [Empty for all persons of this household.]

Column 7: Profession, Occupation, or Trade of each person, male and female, over 15 years of age. Farmer.

Column 10: Place of Birth, Naming the State, Territory, or Country. New York

[For the sake of brevity, I will be more concise for the rest of the household:]

Line 5: Mary is a female, 52 years old.

Line 6: William is a 19 year old male, who is a Farm hand.

Line 7: Albert is a 17 year old male who is a Farm Hand.

Line 8: Dexter is a 16 year old male who is a Farm Hand. 

Line 9: Susan is a 10 year old female who attended school within the year.

The census states that all of the above were born in New York State. I do not believe that that is true as Albert's death record says he was born in Canada. I believe that this is a blended household, and that Mary is Samuel's 2nd wife, as Albert's mother Elizabeth died in Ontario Canada.

I found this census for Albert and Harriet Winch on Ancestry.com, 14 November 2020.
1870 United States Federal Census for Albert Winch. 

Albert is now living in  Minnesota > Martin > Nashville.

This Census says that the dwelling is the 105 visited and the 101 family enumerated.

On line 36 Albert Winch is enumerated. He is a 27 year old white male. He is employed as a farmer. His land is worth $1600, and his personal wealth is $947. Albert was born in Canada.

On line 37 is Harriet, who is a 22 year old white female. She is keeping house, and was born in New York.

This is the Winch Family census from 1880. The family is listed on 2 pages. They are still living in Minnesota > Martin [County] > Nashville > District 148. 

On line 48, the Dwelling number is 17, and is the 17th family visited. 

Albert Winch is a 37 years old white male. He is employed as a farmer. He lists Canada as his place of birth. He states that both of his parents were born in New York.

On line 49 Harriet is enumerated. She is a white female, aged 32 years. She and her parents were born in New York.

On line 50 is Orville E., who is a single, white male, aged 8. He is Albert's son, and is "at home", not employed. He was born in Minnesota. His father was born in Canada and his mother was born in New York.

The next page tells us more about the household. This is a continuation from the previous page- the dwelling and the family are the 17th visited.

Line 1 has enumerated George H. Winch who is a white male aged 6 years. He is Albert's son and is single. He goes to school. He was born in Minnesota. His father was born in Canada and his mother was born in New York.

Line 2 has enumerated Mary J., who is a white female aged 4 years. She is Albert's daughter and is single. She is at home. She was born in Minnesota. Her father was born in Canada, and her mother was born in New York.

Line 3 has enumerated Lulu, who is a white female aged 2 years. She is Albert's daughter and is single. She is at home. She was born in Minnesota. Her father was born in Canada, and her mother was born in New York.

Line 4 has enumerated Ida M. , who is a white female aged 5 out of 12 months. She is Albert's daughter and is single. She is at home. She was born in Minnesota. Her father was born in Canada, and her mother was born in New York.

Line 5 has enumerated Defoe, William, who is a white male, 22 years old. He is Albert's nephew and is married. He is a farmer. He was born in Canada, as were his parents.

Line 6 has enumerated Defoe, Annie, who is a white female 18 years old. She is married to Albert's nephew, William. She is at home. She was born in Michigan, as were her parents.

 The Petition of Harriet Winch the widow of said deceased of the County of Martin and State of Minnesota, respectfully show and states that she is the widow of Albert Winch late of said County of Martin deceased. That said deceased died on the 10th day of February 1887; that on the 18th day of were duly issued March 1887, Letters of Administration upon the estate of said Albert Winch were duly issued by this Court to JJ Eygabroad of said the County of Faribault.

The said deceased left him surviving your petitioner his widow, and the following named children, vis: Orville E., aged 15 years, Geo. Harvey, aged 13 yr, Mary Jane 11 yr, Lulu Pearl aged 9 yr, Ida May 7 yr May aged 7 yr, Zaida I aged 5 yr, and Bessie L. aged 9 mos. old.

That said children all reside with your petitioner in the Town of Nashville, in the County of Martin State of Minnesota

IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN,

I, George Van Amber of Winnebago City in the County of Faribault and State of Minnesota being of sound mind and memory, and considering the uncertainty of this frail and transitory life, do therefore make, ordain, publish and declare this to be my Last Will and Testament.

First, I order and direct that my Executor hereinafter named, pay all my just debts and funeral expenses as soon after my decease as conveniently may be.

Second, after the payment of such funeral expenses and debts, I give, devise and bequeath unto my son Charles W Van Amber The sum of Three Hundred Dollars.

Third - I give and bequeathe unto my step daughter Ellen Q. Bersell the sum of Two Hundred Dollars

Fourth - I give and bequeath unto my daughter Edna Thatcher and my son Ray Van Amber all the residue and remainder of my estate both Real and Personal that I may own at the time of my death, to be divided equally share & share alike.
