Jarl Family - Johan Albin Andersson Jarl - Emmigration - page 6

On Ancestry.com, I found some information of Albin's arrival in the United States.

Albin arrived on 26 March 1888.

"Immigrated from Liverpool England and Queenstown Ireland on the ship "Ohio". Arrived in New York March 26 1888 at age 14.Bound for Iowa. Married Carrie Johnson, December 5 1896, Odebolt, Sac County Iowa. Died June 21, 1924 Denison, Crawford County, Iowa". Ancestry.com. 16 February 2019.

"SS Ohio was an iron passenger-cargo steamship built by William Cramp & Sons in 1872. The second of a series of four Pennsylvania-class vessels, Ohio and her three sister ships-Pennsylvania, Indiana and Illinois-were the largest iron ships ever built in the United States at the time of their construction, and amongst the first ships to be fitted with compound steam engines. There were also the first ships to challenge British dominance of the transatlantic trade since the American Civil War.

Ohio spent most of her career on the Liverpool-Philadelphia route she had originally been designed to service. After 25 years of transatlantic crossings Ohio was sold in 1898 for service in the Alaskan gold rush. She was wrecked in British Columbian waters in 1909.

The four Pennsylvania class liners were constructed at a cost of $520,000 each by William Cramp & Sons on behalf of the American Steamship Company (ASC), a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. The Railroad intended to utilize the vessels to bring European immigrants direct to Philadelphia, thus ensuring the company a stead stream of customers."

VanAmber Family - Harriet Van Amber Winch - Van Amber Family Census 1850 - page 2

Below is the first documentation that I have Harriet and her family in Wisconsin is this 1850 census for Pleasant Valley, Marquette, Wisconsin.

This census was taken on the 21st day of August 1850. This copy is from Ancestry.com.

This family was the 754th enumerated for this district.

The first entry is her father George Van Amber. George's age is listed as 34 years, male and is a farmer. It says that he was born in Canada.

Mary is listed next as being a 34 year old female who was born in New York.

The next entry is Lusetta who is a 7 years old female who was born in New York.

Harriet is a 2 year old female who was also born in New York.

Lester is a 7 month old male who was born in Wisconsin.

Looking at this census we can surmise that the family moved to Wisconsin in 1849 - 1850.
