Masters Family - Deborah Carline Masters Harr Nelson - Newspaper Articles

 I found these articles from the Fresno Bee, 28 July 1940, Sunday Page 7:

Haar-Masters Engagement is Announced [Deb's picture is the lower right.]

    Miss Deborah Carolyn Masters engagement to Henry C. Haar and plans for their wedding in September were announced last Sunday at a breakfast party in the Hotel Fresno.

    Cards in heart sealed envelopes used as placecards revealed the troth. A corsage of pink carnations marked each guest place. The bride elect were a corsage of red roses and stefanotis. White gladioli  and fern formed the table centerpiece.

    The guests were Mesdames Raymond Colby, Jr., Robert Francis and Urban Nilmeir, and Misses Vera Cunningham, Mildred Reid, Elsie May Haar, Phyllis Fox, Dorothy May Brown, Mary Lou Sims, Doris Winch and Lola Winch.

    The bride elect is a daughter of Mrs. Emily Winch of Fresno. She was graduated from the Roosevelt High School and attended the commercial division of the Fresno Technical High School.

    The future bridegroom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. George Haar, Sr., of Fresno. He attended a business college after his graduation from the Fresno High School, and is employed by the Truck Fuels Inc., and Parkhill-Wade.

Deborah Masters is Honor Guest At Bridal Shower

    Miss Deborah Masters, who will become the bride of Henry Haar September 22nd, was the guest of honor at a miscellaneous shower last Friday evening. The setting for the affair was the home of Dr. and Mrs. V.E. Laisne on Lansing Way, and the hostesses were Mesdames Raymond Colby, Lester Van Dyke and Robert C. Francis and Misses Phyllis Fox, Dorothy Mae Brown, Marge Machaid, Mildred Reid and Mary Lou Sims.

    The evening was spent in playing game of Dutch shist. Prizes in the games were presented to Misses Elsie Haar, Patricia Young and Vera Cunningham. The bride elect was presented with a shower of gifts. Refreshments were cantered with pastel shaded candles.

    The guest with Miss Masters include Mesdames Emma Nilmeir, Edmund Pate, Edward Reed, and Arthur P. Andrews and Misses Helen Selvi, Dannabelle Curty, Doris Winch, Margie Fox, Margie Hamilton, Haar. Young and Cuningham, all of Fresno. Mrs. Scheidt of Bakersfield and Mrs. Doris Lew of Oakland.

Obituaries

HARR INFANT DIES

Graveside funeral services will be held today at the Mountain View Cemetery for the infant son of Mechinists Mate First Class and Mrs. Henry C. Haar who was born and died Sunday

    Harr is serving overseas. Mrs. Haar resides at 113 Adaline Avenue.

    Besides the parents, the survivors are two grandmothers, Mrs. Emily Winch and Mrs. Catherine Haar of Fresno.

    Funeral arrangements are being made by the Lisle Funeral Home.

Husband Is Accused -- Deborah Harr has filed a divorce action against Henry Haar in which he is accused of cruelty. She seeks $350 a month alimony and declares Haar earns approximately $700 a month in the Acme Butane and Appliance Company, a gas and electrical appliance business. They were married in Fresno September 22, 1940.

PRIZES FOR ALL - There were two dozen pieces of glittering hardware distributed to the winners in the Fresno City Women's Golf Championship. On the right is Mrs. Don Shelburne and the Melville-Halstead champion's trophy. Mrs. Lawrence Pape, left, was low net of the field. Others, behind Mrs. Pape, left to right, are Mrs. Howard Mau, low net of championship flight, Mrs. Richard Nelson, low net second flight; Mrs. harper, third flight, Mrs. John Schiebelhut, fourth flight; Mrs. Oliver Bidwell, fifth, Mrs. Robert Kell sixth, and Mrs. Joseph Mooser, seventh. The tourney was completed yesterday.

Youth Seizes Woman's Purse

    The theft of her purse was reported to the police by Mrs. Deborah Nelson of 3643 N. Clark Ave., who said it was snatched by one of two youths in front of her home at 9:40 o'clock last night.

    Mrs. Nelson told the police she was locking her automobile when one of the youths bumped against her and seized the purse.

    The purse contained two pairs of glasses worth $65 each, a lighter and other articles but only $1 in cash.

NELSON, DEBORAH CAROLINE - Private services for Deborah Caroline Nelson, 79, of Fresno, were held under the direction of Cremation Society of Central California. Mrs. Nelson, a saleswoman for Gottschalks for 10 years, died Tuesday. Remembrances may be sent to the Nancy Hinds Hospice Home, 1436 W. Twain, Fresno 93711.
